joint tenancy dispute - Deposit

A joint tenancy was agreed , deposit, rent, bills, were split 50/50 the deposit was put into a scheme via the landlord. 18mths later one tenant got into debt and moved out, not paying their proportion of bills etc leaving debts behind, he agreed the original portion of deposit could be passed over to the remaining tenant. A new tenancy was provided by landlord in remaining tenants sole name - 4 years later remaining tenant is moving out and the other former tenant has found out and approached landlord for his share of the deposit! what can the landlord do, when he was told the deposit was to be transferred to the other party in lieu of debts accrued

Provided there is written proof probably needs to do nothing. The new AST will show the deposit as being held in one name I assume. Tell this person that the problem is between them and the person who is moving out now and nothing to do with you.

That is the problem the details/full deposit were not updated/transferred to the current tenant

Then you potentially have the problem that the scheme will need release permission from both parties. I would be asking the remaining tenant to sort it out.
