  • Regulations related to height of trees

I have some tall conifers at the side of my house which runs along the back gardens of neighbouring properties on another road. Although the trees were originally planted following the neighbour’s objections to a planning request for an extension, citing lack of privacy, one of the neighbours is now complaining that I need to trim down the trees as they are too big and are reducing light into her gardens. As I am currently unemployed, this large expense is not currently something that I am budgeting for. However, she is telling me that she spoke to a councillor who told her trees should not be taller than 2 meters and I am liable for this?!! This seems rather unrealistic to me as otherwise no one would ever have talk trees in their gardens. (The trees are at the back of her garden (not sure how far from her house but I estimate somewhere between 6-10 meters away.

Your local Council will have their tree policy on their website. This will vary from area to area. Example below -
