  • Council Tax - death of a joint owner

Mother was 50% owner of her house and went into care home for several years during which time the house was exempt from Council tax. My sister and I were left the other 50% of this house when my father died. We both live elsewhere and pay Council tax to other authorities. On my mother’s death we are told we must pay Council Tax from the date of my mother’s death and not from date probate granted. This seems unfair but Council insists they are entitled to do this under Council Tax Legislation. Please advise

It would be useful if you could find out from the Council what legislation it relies upon.
