  • Do I have a permanent right to stay in a family home?

Hello, hoping someone can help me with some advice

Me, my mother and father live in a house that is owned by 4 other relatives. We've lived in it for more than 30 years, and we had permission from the head of the family, my grandfather to live there. I don't think it was in writing, maybe verbal, but it was certainly implicit as whenever he came on holiday to visit us, he stayed in the house. He had his own room there and always slept in it. He was also one of the 4 owners

My grandfather has now passed away, and so have 2 others. The last relative has claimed full ownership of the house and wants to sell it

Do I and my parents have a right to stop the sale and continue living there?

If we had permanent permission from my grandfather to live there forever, does it still apply even though the 4th relative wants to sell?

We aren't tenants, we don't pay rent for staying there. We pay all the bills like council tax and utility

    Hi HSE

Condolences on the passing of your grandfather.

I think what you may have is a 'licence to occupy' -

Did your grandfather leave a will? By the sounds of it he clearly wanted you and your parents to stay in the house forever.

It might be an idea to get some free legal advice, some solicitors offer that.

I'm sure other members will advise.
