If you had permission to be on the land you could not claim adverse possession as you would have been occupying it under licence.

For a period of (I think) 12 years you will have to possess it to the exclusion of any other party, without objection or consent.
You will need to show intention to possess .eg. you have fenced it in some way. and you carry out maintenance such as cutting the grass and hedges.
And finally you have never paid any rent for it

      Long term plan I think!

If that permission expires and you then continue to occupy and upkeep the property for a period of 10-12 years (depending on the situation) then you have a claim of adverse possession.
Not according to this government website Squatting and the law: Squatters' rights to property - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

My question is, if there’s another way to initially occupy the property legally so that a claim to adverse possession will be legal.

I would much prefer to buy this property than illegally squat in it, but if I could obtain it legally then obviously it would be the moral and best legal option.

response in red, and I know of no other way
