Do I need permission to put a gate in my fence?

At the end of my garden is my fence. On the other side of the fence is a wide grass verge then a road and on the other side of the road set far back are houses for the elderly.
The road is a small cul-de-sac.
Is it ok to put a gate in the fence? Or do I need permission?

Is it a public road?
If there is nothing in your deeds which says you have to maintain a fence, it would be ridiculous to say you could not put a gate in the fence, when you could just remove the fence.
As it is your fence, I can't see thar anyone can object if you replace part of the fixed fence with a hinged section.
There may possibly be an issue with you accessing the verge via your hinged section, but that will depend on ownership of the verge.
I have assumed you are looking for pedestrian access, if vehicular there may be other considerations

Thank you for your reply. I presume the cul-de-sac is public. It has a tarmac surface and the street signage and lamposts are the same as any other road around here. The elderly resident houses are maintained by a housing association, and either they or council contractors cut the verge. The fence is a mess and not well maintained.
