  • Large Firework Display Planned Next Door to Stud Farm

Hi, Firstly, I apologise if this is in the wrong section, but I was unsure where to post it, so please feel free to move it if it needs moving.

This is my problem. I own a Small Holding in the countryside and breed ponies as a hobby. My Farmhouse is 300 years old and I own the land surrounding the property with the exception of a couple of acres at one side of my property, which is owned by the Village Cricket Club. I have lived here for 24 years and for many years a large bonfire and huge firework display, (Grade 4 fireworks which I am told you need a licence to handled and light), has been held next to my property around the 5th November.

I have approximately 30 mares and foals, and the firework display is so close to my property, that many of the large rockets go over my land and the next day it has been known for us to have to pick up in excess of 30 rockets sticks from my land, many of them are over two feet long, which if they hit an animal, could cause a lot of damage. As a result, each year the bonfire and firework display has been on, it has meant a lot of extra expense, work, and worry for us as we have had to bring every pony inside in order to keep them safe, meaning we have to use bedding and feed we wouldn`t normally use, and then of course the next day we have to spend the extra time mucking out multiple stables.

The last two years a bonfire and firework display hasn`t been held as the previous two years, it lost a lot of money...it has been bliss to be honest! Then this week, I found out via Facebook, that they are once again holding the bonfire and huge firework display! We are upset to say the least! We live in the countryside for the peace and quiet, not for it to sound like World War 3 has broken out next to our home and to frighten not only our animals, but also all of the wildlife around here!

My question is this, what can we do to stop it being held please? Can anyone advise us? We aren`t killjoys, and are good neighbours to the Cricket Club, but it isn`t reciprocated...for example, in the horrible wet Winter last year, on many occasions the waters were in danger of flooding the Club House and Bar, and as it isn`t manned, we used our own pumps to get rid of the water to stop any damage being caused, we have also allowed them to use one of our paddocks to park cars in when they have functions that their car parks can`t accommodate and when their alarm goes off in the middle of the night, we always go check it out for them and we feel really let down by them now.

My partner has tried speaking to them and was basically told that it is a Community event and if we object to the bonfire and fireworks, `something` may happen to us or our property...in actual fact, the majority of people who attend the event don`t even live in our Village, so we have been threatened!

We don`t wish to go to the police, but we are going to object now if we can. The bonfire itself is right next to the main road that runs from our Village to the next Village, so the smoke often causes a hazard, also, being a Farm, we have hay and straw stored which is in danger of being ignited by stray sparks from the bonfire or fireworks, the fireworks used are for professional displays, Grade 4 I believe they are categorised as, yet alcoholic drinks are served at the event too.

Is there anything we can do legally to stop this please? When it`s been held in the past, we have literally lived on our nerves until it`s over as we`ve had need to call the vet out to several ponies due to stress colics and injuries caused by panicking because of the horrifically loud bangs and we just don`t want to put ourselves, our animals, or the wildlife through it again.

    Thank you in advance xx

Try the local Council and/or Fire Service as would imagine an event of this size would need some form of Licence and Insurance.
