  • fraud??

    My daughter currently rents a property and has done since January 2013. She is still receiving letters for the previous tenant and although she has been returning them "no longer at this address" she is continuing to receive them. She inadvertently opened one recently (one of several with the same postmark) and it appears that the previous tenant is trying to buy properties / timeshares overseas using his old address - mostly in Australia. She has had several bailiffs knocking on the door for various debts, including one for outstanding car finance of over 10k, outstanding bills etc.

    It looks very suspicious given the manner that the previous tenant vacated the premises (moonlight flit with no forwarding address). My daughter is worried that her car may be clamped by an over zealous bailiff and asked who she should report this to.

    Does anyone know who she could speak to ?

    Thanks,

    Kit

    The most practical way of dealing with this is for your daughter to swear a Statutory Declaration to include the following -

    a. That she has been the tenant at [address] since [date];
    b. That she has no connection with the previous tenant;
    c. That all goods and chattels in her home are her property or, if owned by third parties, the names of those third parties;
    d. That her car Vehicle Registration Mark (VRM) [VRM] belongs to her or whoever and has been so since [date].

    I would recommend that she opens ALL correspondence addressed to the previous tenant, as and when it arrives, and notifies those who are chasing the previous tenant that they have done a flit. I had this when I moved into my home 15 years ago and had a procession of letters from DCAs, as well as a doorstep visit. The doorstep "visitor" was told to get back into his car and return to from whence he had come, only it was in blunter terms than that.
    Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.
