Hello,
I received a letter from the council stating I owe them over £1000 back pay in rent and that I've been underpaying for roughly 18 months.
However, I wrote to them roughly around 18 months ago asking to confirm my rent was correct and that I didn't owe anything and they replied by correcting my rent and asking me to pay over £300 extra to them. I did this and thought all was fine (as it stated on the letter that I was all upto date) and continued paying the new amount. I have the letter still btw.
I hav'nt received a response yet but shall I continue to pay the amount in rent I have been paying previously or the new adjusted amount. also, what would be the best route to go down to argue this case. I have asked citizens advice and they have drafted a letter stating to put all arrears on hold until further and that I didn't consider this something I should be paying due to it being their cockup.
I'm not saying I won't ever pay this but it's more the fact that they can't expect someone to afford an increase in rent plus back pay from 18 months ago.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I have posted this in the wrong section. Apologies.
Many Thanks
P.S. I am happy to upload the letter from them but as I'm at work I won't be able until tonight. Obviously I will blank out all sensitive data.
