  • currys data farming/its incase you lost the receipt

well then, last friday i went into currys/pc world to buy the new ipad.
when i got to the check out i was bombarded with the usual warranty hard sell,

any when i went to pay i was asked for my name, address, life story etc. the excuse given was "its incase you lose your receipt" routine. it shocked them when i refused and they stated they could not sell me the item unless i gave those details.

i said fair enough and walked out so my questions are

1/ by what autrhority do currys have in asking for these details under the DPA 1998 prior to sale

2/ currys have to tell you why they are storing that data. the real reason is not incase you lose your receipt but domestic and general sales pitches after 12 months

3/ how can this data farming be written into the tills computer prior to payment

i underrstand when buying a tv details have to be given, tv licence for example, but general house hold goods takes the michael

i realise stores do not have to sell you anything as its their property until sold but i am going on a legal angle, not consumer issues

this seems to be no more than using the till receipt routine as a way of getting around the DPA TO BE USED FOR DATA FARMING AND I WOULD VALUE COMMENTS ON THE LEGALITY OF THIS PRACTICE

a letter of complaint and requesting an explanation will be heading to DSG head office

That was probably the wisest choice to make, as you have clearly demonstrated yet again that the High Street box shifters have not the least respect for consumer or other law.

Of course, you could have told them a lot of rubbish, as there would be no way the store could verify any data.

This is rife. Booking into a hotel not so long ago, I noticed that the small print said they would use my details for marketing purposes, unless I wrote to a certain address and asked them not to.

No option of ticking a box.

It was booked through work, I gave the work address.

One could book in the name of the apparently steatopygous Hugh Jarce and give the phone number of 0161 856 3221.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, there is a change in the law in the pipeline that will require you to opt into any marketing use of your personal data. The opt out system that currently exists will be dead.

Yep then currys and pc world will be stuffed - When i go in there, if they ever ask me my details i always say, non your your business. They of course give me the say line as they gave militant, saying its incase i lose my receipt. I always say bull****, its so you can process my data under the delusion i willingly gave it to you and authorised you to do so. So then you can hammer me with marketing materiel and sell my details to marketing companies for a profit.... Now do you want my money or would you prefer i bought so and so item from somewhere else along with making a complaint direct to the ICO and the CEO of your company?

Usually does the trick - put it this way they no longer bother asking lol

              Hi Militant

I dont think there is any law against them asking for the information, it is what they do with it once they have it that is the issue

Personally i never give anyone the right info, i enjoy the calls that come up"international " on your telephone the best. They obvioulsy orrigininate in a sweat shop overseas somewhere , rarely pronounce your name right, oh and of course they are not trying to sell you anything they are just doing a survey.

You can tell them anything, i tried for nearly half an hour to make them hang up, told them i lived in a large estate in Cheshire that i had six wives and got my gas from a pipeline direct from the north sea, he just wrote it all down.
Amazing what you do when your bored.

I like it! LOL! I quite agree with what you say about there not being any law about a trader asking for information. However, there are changes in the pipeline with regard to what traders do with your information once they've got it. It means you won't have to opt out of your name going on their mailing lists. That right is being taken away from them, mainly, because of abuse.
