What counts as “proof” of name change to banks?

    Hi Leo1234

    Welcome to LB

They normally require original or certified copies of a legal document like a marriage certificate, deed poll or decree absolute (and maybe documents such as Passport, Driving Licence).

Banks mainly want a clear deed poll that shows your old name and your new one. If it looks properly written and easy to follow, they usually update your details without any problem. A neighbour told me their bank accepted their document easily because it was made with a provider like the UK Deed Poll Office.

UK DeedPoll Office (LLC) are just a private company charging money for doing something you can easily do yourself for nothing, not a government agency.

If you want to give a Deed Poll official endorsement you need to get it Enrolled at the High Court. https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-...ith-the-courts

        That gov.uk page advises:

"Some organisations (such as some banks, mobile phone companies or energy providers) may only accept an enrolled deed poll to change your name on their records. Contact the organisation to understand the deed poll they will accept as proof of your new name",

Perhaps UK DeedPoll Office (LLC) and private companies like them are sometimes misunderstood by a bank which assumes that they have some sort of official provider status or approval but they don't. UK DeedPoll Office LLC is the UK office of a American company and has a name very similar to the actual department of the High Court that deals with Enrolling Deed Polls (the Deed Poll Office of the King's Bench Division of the High Court). No doubt the similarity in names is entirely coincidental.
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.
