  • Illegally Obtained Address?

My partner's company owns a property in Wales that is a construction site, for which I am the property guardian/site security.

Two family members (referred henceforth as Person A & Person B) are in a legal battle that is irrelevant to my partner and I.

For clarity Person A nor Person B have the address of the property.

Person A's solicitor recently sent addressed to me at the property my partner's company owns. Him and I are baffled as to why they did this.

    For context:

-My partner's property is rates exempt as it is dangerous construction site, so I'm not on any council tax bills etc

-I am not on the electoral role

-I am not on any benefits nor could I be at such address

-Neither my partner nor I have any criminal convictions

-There are no recent searches (soft or hard) on my credit file, nor do I have any bad debts etc

-The property has never been referenced in any court documents to our knowledge

-The property is owned by my partners company and I am not a director of that company, nor is the address on companies house

-My partner is adamant that the address isn't publicly listed as associated with me on any publicly accessible records

-Apart from a vehicle, there is nothing registered at the property

-The vehicle nor ourselves are on Google Earth street view etc

-Neither my partner nor I have ever uploaded any pictures of the location/locality the property is in nor have we 'checked-in' on social media etc

Everything in my gut says the firm have used unorthodox methods to obtain the address they've written to me at, either by requesting information about the vehicle from the DVLA under false pretences or by undertaking surveillance of me.

How can I verify how they found such address? And who can I report these concerns to, if any illegal activities have occurred?

They found your partner on companies house and guessed they could contact you there? Why is receiving a letter such an issue for you?

To confirm, the address isn't on companies house.

Land registry? I cannot imagine why receiving a letter is such an issue though!

My name nor my partner's name is on the land registry. I find it creepy that someone would go to this level to try and make a point. I think I should call the police as my partner has been a victim of hate crimes before that ended up in prosecutions. I have come to this forum not to debate it, I want to confirm the correct channels to complain via.

Fair enough. I do not think the Police will be very interested as it is a solicitor's letter rather than an abusive letter but you should absolutely do so if you are concerned.

Possibly complaint to the SRA?, but not likely to get a result

They probably used a tracing agent. Finding your address isn't illegal in itself so I doubt there is anyone to complain to, nor does anyone have any obligation to explain to you how they found you. You have no evidence of any illegal acts. The obvious first step is to ask the solicitor who sent you the letter how they got your address, have you done that?

I can't see the relevance of your partner having previously been the victim of hate crime. I assume the solicitor's letter doesn't make hate threats so why is it a police matter?

You can't complain if there has been no wrong-doing. The lengthy steps you have taken to avoid being found are unusual, as is your attempt to shut down any questions on here about the background to your concerns.

If you are not on the electoral role, an offence may have been committed by you or the householder where you were living when the registration form required completion.
So if you intend complaining to whoever, be a bit cautious!

People use tracing agents to find those who do not wish to be found.
