Please contact your predecessor and the person involved in the case to resolve this issue. If it's a good thing to be able to resolve it without going to court, try to negotiate

        What proof have they provided?

Do they have something in writing?

        Do the accounts support this?

If the debt was there before you joined, have you tracked down previous Committee members?

Also the case wouldn't be against you, it would be against the entity,

Having been in court for something not too similar to this but the principle should be attained by a judge, if not a member of a committee at the time then you are released from any action against you - outcome those involved paid the bills.

my case was I was asked to chair a meeting (dispute) on a subject not involved in) I ended up paying proportion all because I overseed the meeting between parties, justice in this country went out of the window decades ago due to war of words over talking so called unbiased judges. (money money money) justice only if you have big money = no money no justice.
