UK Residence question

Hello all,

First of all, apologies if the question is being posted in the wrong section. I reside in the UK since June 2008, I would like to apply for British Citizenship. I come from a country within the EEA (Poland) and according to the information provided by HM Government I must "apply if you’re from the EEA and you’ve had permanent residence status for the last 12 months". Additionally:

"To apply for British citizenship, you need to:

• live in the UK for another year after qualifying for permanent residence status
• have a permanent residence document

You can apply with your permanent residence document immediately if:

• you’ve already lived in the UK for a year after qualifying for permanent residence"

This part is very confusing. As I understand it I must live in the UK for another year after receiving my permanent residence status. Am I correct? The second part mentions that I can apply immediately provided that I lived in the UK for a year after qualifying. Then if I apply, and successfully gain my permanent residence status (keeping in mind I live here since 2008) I am not required to wait another year? Can someone clear this up for me?

Hi and welcome

you qualify for permanent residence status after living in UK for 5 years.

After that time you can obtain a permanent residence document.

When you have lived in UK for 6 years and have the permanent residence document you can apply for citizenship
