    please help. A woman is being prevented from working, how would a husband benefit from preventing his wife from working?

    Control , sounds like it might be an abusive relationship. If his wife is not working she has no money of her own and is dependant on her husbnd financially. this allows him to control her and to stop her leaving .

            Was responding to the 'prevented from working' statement.

            As I viewed it, a husband preventing his wife from working is for HIS gain whether mentally, financially or emotionally. As these are focused on him, I associate it to be selfishness or control on his part.

            Also he may have being doing his best to talk her out of working or thinking of working.

            Then with the OP adding 'want to stop her leaving him'. I interpreted there was a discussion of leaving the household because the husband is not happy with his wife working or about to start employment.

            However, you've raised a valid point, I think
