I was just wondering when I send an email to an ex's solicitor, do they send a copy of the actual email to their client or do they explain what I said in the email?

That will depend on what is agreed between client and solicitor, immediate updates or updates at planed meetings for instance.

In most cases they would show the correspondence to their client to take their clients instructions on a response to such an email.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to enlighten your ex's solicitor as to what an awful person their client is! Happens all the time....
