why would a husband prevent a wife from working, would it help him financially if he wished to divorce her? in what way would it benefit him?

I think the general advice was that your friend should try and obtain professional advice, possibly starting at the doctors.
To me it sounds as if she is being abused and controlled.
Some of the girls on here may be able to give better more practical advice
