How can I find out when my ex-wife dies?

Sounds harsh, I know, but 25 years ago I was awarded by the County Court my share of the house. I was awarded just £2000 with no interest or value increase adjustment - just £2000 and to be paid to me when my ex-wife dies. She is now 84 so the event will probably occur at some time within the next 6 to 10 or so years. I cannot be in contact with her or her family and I would imagine that her family will do their utmost to deny me access to my money despite the court order. I want to ensure that I get my money or my beneficiary gets it if I die first. She is still listed on the current electoral roll so I assume that she is still living and at that address but how can I discover when her death occurs to be able to claim against her estate before the house is disposed of?

As such, your ex-wife's executors will be bound by the court order. However, I would recommend you speak to a legal professional specialising in probate matters about your case. They would be the best person to advise you on how to proceed.

Having just checked the court order, it was for £2500 not 2000 and the order states that my ex wife must place a charge on the house in my favour. I have checked land registry and the charge was never placed. As she did not comply with the order, can I go back to court and apply for the money to be paid now instead of waiting till she dies? Or must I simply apply for the charge myself adding the cost of doing so to the amount owing to me?

Try putting a caution on the property at the Land Registry.
