  • Notary Public statement in separation proceedings

It is possible that I will have to separate with my partner. We are not married, but some time ago she made a statement to a Notary Public (of which I have the original hard copy) that we have a long-term common law relationship. She is the "earner" in our family and I am financially dependent upon her. Can anyone tell me whether the statement will count in any "divorce" proceedings that might take place? Thanks.

What did the statement say and for what purpose was it made?

Without going into specifics, her statement was to the effect of declaring our long-term common law relationship (of 18 years at the time), the fact that we had children, that we shared a household, had a joint bank account and shared household expenses. It was made in support of my application for a Long Term Social Visitors Pass in Singapore, when we were planning to move there some years ago as a result of a work position that my partner had accepted. Because we were not married, we needed some kind of proof that we actually were a family.
