  • Mariage certificate on divorce

I was divorced 15 years ago so I can't remember what happened to the marriage certificate on completion, is it handed to the court and cancelled.
Why I am asking? I have been looking for mine and can't find it which is why I am asking if it was cancelled?
The reason I need it is for my ex wife. She continued using the marriage name after divorce so her UK passport, driving license, bank accounts are in her married name. She is a dual national with a UK PP and a foreign PP. The foreign PP is in her maiden name and the UK PP office wont renew the UK PP until she changes the name on her foreign PP or she changes her UK name by deed poll to her maiden name. To change her name on her national PP she has found an agent in the UK who can do all the paperwork but they need the marriage certificate as proof of her name change to submit to the foreign national office.
Failing all of that I assume that the is a copy of the marriage certificate in the archives so would she be able to get a copy?

The original marriage certificate is never cancelled as the marriage is a still valid between date of marriage and date of divorce. Divorce doesn't cancel a marriage as if it never existed.

You don't hand in the marriage certificate to the court. You keep it.

If the original certificate has been lost you can can obtain a copy from the government General Register Office (GRO) here. There is a small fee.

Always use this official gov.uk website to get a copy certificate. There are lots of scam sites on the internet where private companies will claim they can get certificates for you but they charge many times the official fee.
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

Just had a look at the UK Gov website but it is asking for both parents names? Is that normal. I am not even sure if I have the correct date for the marriage. Do all 4 parent's names have to be included. The ex wife's parents are not UK citizens so not sure how the spelling of the parents names was put on the certificate. Do spellings have to be 100% correct..
