  • Recordings and Social Services

I was having a conversation with a neighbour yesterday and the topic of voice recording of SS appointments in the home came up. I'd never thought about it before, but I decided to have a dig to see what I could find out about the legalities.

From the quote below (taken from the 'basw' pdf attached) it seems that voice recordings of meetings are not illegal or covered by the DPA as such, although personally I'd say that it would be nice to inform the other party that recording is in progress.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT RECORDING MEETINGS?
Remember, recording meetings is not the same as distributing or publishing the records or recordings that have been made. This part of the guidance is looking at the first aspect – the making of recordings.

DOES THE DATA PROTECTION ACT 1997 SAY PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RECORD MEETINGS?

No. It does not prevent parents recording meetings.

A parent is not a data controller or processor for the purposes of the act, and what a professional says at a social work meeting or interview is not personal data for the purposes of the act (although the personal data of others may be contained in what is said at a meeting).

    Re: Recordings and Social Services

    Hi

Have had to use recordings form SS workers to help my daughter. If its in your own home, you can record it regardless, If its in there offices, you have to inform them that your recording, and they can refusse, although, i can not imagine any council would stand if challanged. ( she refussed to attend unless it was recorded, after they said no, then they agreed.

The issuse arnt just with the recording, its wither it can be used agaist the person.

But i would always record if you have to deal with any council department.
crazy council ( as in local council,NELC ) as a member of the public, i don't get mad, i get even

would you suggest telling them, or just doing it?? (I could print her off a poster saying recording in progress if it was needed lol)

I'd call BS on even telling them. http://www.transparencyproject.org.u...ocial-workers/
