  • Long time sick

    Hi,

    I have had depression and been off work for nearly 1 year. I have worked for my employer for 38 years + always been a good worker, worked overtime, went in on saturdays etc.

    Alot my depression is due to my husband being ill, ending up with him having 6 ops, all afterwards resulting in HND. It is now, he is above leg amputee, has severe emphysema, high blood pressure, cholesterol and hiatius hernia. My home needs adaptions as he is in a wheelchair, and not suitable for a prosthic leg. I have had the OH in from the local council and the grant is being prepared for the panel, but can take up to a year to happen. Meanwhile, he cannot open the door, leave the house, go to the loo - nothing much. I am a mess. The doctor supports me and I go to see him every month for the certificate and tablets.

    I went to see my employer OH. I showed him all the letters and he could see just what stress I have been through. I asked him what should I do as I was worried (I am concientious and I always think of how they are coping etc. At the beginning when in I got in from hospital I use to answer emails, but they disconnected me, so after that I lost touch). He wrote a report to say I was not fit for work, he told me to not worry about anything. I was on enhanced salary that was still available for a few motnhs, so go and sort out what needed to be done, and go and see him in 4 - 6 weeks. I cried. It was with pure relief, felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I did ask him my options but he said don't need to worry about that yet, but I pushed it and it was 6 months severence, just leave, or retire. (the latter I cannot yet for another year).

    Then he contacted me to meet with him again this week. No problem.

    Saturday I got a letter from my employer telling me they are taking me to Stage Two.Formal Meeting, to discuss my absence and consider my dismissal. I am so worried. If I had known I would have given my notice when I saw the OH. If I have to go I really don't want to be dismissed like this. On the one hand I understand their point, but after so long and never any problems always been a good worker, why not tell me to resign rather then go before three people with one person taking notes. I already know that I won't be able to go, with my blood pressure etc and the depression I can't face it. I just need some advice on what you would do.

      It sounds like you have had a pretty tough time. As you state your depression (due in a large part to the ill health of your husband) is the reason that you are signed off sick, however can I ask are you also having to deal with the fact that you have become the "carer" for your husband? If this is the case then even if you were well enough to go back to work would you actually be able to?

      Other than meeting with OH (I presume Occupational Health) at work has a manager or HR person (if you have an HR department) contacted you or had any discussion with you about your absence, asked permission to contact your GP for a medical report, informed you of their process for dealing with employees on long term sickness absence such as sick pay?

      Were you given a date for the meeting and were you given the right to be accompanied?

      Sorry about all the questions just need to have a bit more info in order to be able to provide some guidance.
