Invasion of privacy data protection

Hopefully someone can help me here urgentoy please, i have a case against my previous employers for wrongful dismissal under breach of contrat that ACAS are dealing with. Now when i left i was instructed to give the laptop back which i did of course as it was in the office, but there was some paperwork that was relevant to my late fathers estate which i needed so i asked if someone could provide access so that i could collect it. Today i receive two emails (i work away and internet access is not good) saying that he would scan and send to me ( i never asked for that or had chance to respond) the second was from the second director saying that they needed to check as they were not sure if their paperwork was in there as it was their laptop and case ( not true as the case is/was mine) and they then proceeded to list all the contents in an email including "numerous debt collection letter, personal medical scan results, medical appiontments, military discharge medical paperwork and assorted personal correspondence" they then scanned and send this to me copying in my union.....their legar representative and my WIFE!!!! stating that " they believe that i was hiding it from home" !!!!!! surely to god this is an invasion of privacy and against data protection laws??? please someone help as the stress is horrendous.

Hello I think you might want to seek legal advice in this specifically but I recall a similar situation earlier this year with a solicitor Who was in dispute with their employer law firm. They accessed numerous personal emails with a view to disclosing them. She issued legal proceedings for breach of privacy and they claimed they were entitled to search and use them because they were on the firms equipment. The law firm eventually settled the matter and gave certain undertakings presumably not to use that information again and destroy it.

The director should not have circulated any personal or sensitive information without your authorisation and I suggest you at the very least be sending a letter before action on this and get them to give undertakings that they will not use the information and all copies will be destroyed.
