  • Being offered option to move on and end employment

Hi, I wondered if anyone out there could offer some advice or tell me what to expect.

I have been employed by my current employer for 17 years in a variety of roles, moving through the business following a succession of promotions. For the last 2 and a half years I have been working for a boss who is/was new to me. Their way of working was very different to that of what I have been used to, and added to that my role changed around the same time, it now seems that I don't fit the profile of what they are looking for in a person doing my role. I was called to a meeting to discuss where I am currently and was told that I need to do better. I was given 2 options, 1) stay in the role, and "try and turn it around" or 2) Shake hands and say it isn't working and we part ways.

My concern is that if I was to stay then that would be only to allow them to manage me out of the business, as I no longer feel that I am a fit for the company. Added to that the fact that for them to be happy for me to go after 17 years, then I am obviously not valued and have no future at the business so am probably best to move on.

I have not been offered any settlement at all as it stands, and am not sure how to expect this all to pan out. Have any of you on the forum any experience of a similar instance that I could draw some knowledge from?

    Many thanks in advance.

Hi, is there anyone that can advise me on this? If the answers are on another thread then if you could let me know where to find it that would be great.

      Many thanks in advance.

Did option 1 come with a specific description of what they require of you?
Because not fitting the profile or needing to try to turn it around doesn't really give you a clue about their expectations.

As for option 2; someone's employment doesn't end by a simple handshake.
Either they dismiss you, you resign or you come to a mutually agreeable settlement.

Are they seriously expecting you come back with a response on such limited information?
