I hope someone can help me.
I want to know my rights here and what I can do. I began working in a job in March this year, I commute an hour and half to the office from my home by train.
The job requires me to do one weekend day every six weeks and do one week of early shifts every 3 months. The early shift is supposed to be 7-3:30pm and everyone in the office hates doing them.
Because I have a long commute, the shift would have meant I left my house at 5am and walked in the pitch black. My manager agreed to let me work 7-9 at home and then come in to work for 11 until 5:30.
So I do that when my turn comes around and find it really hard and tiring and I always have problems on public transport.
But now, my boss wants me to do that shift ALL THE TIME.
Because I am the only person to do my specific role, he wants to hire a second person and have them work a late shift and I do the early every day.
I told my boss I would be very unhappy with doing that due to both practical reasons (train) and just being too tired out with the commute and having to work at home, stop, travel, then work again.
He didn't seem to accept my reasoning, even though colleagues I have told think it's an unbelievable suggestion considering there are people living on the office doorstep.
I want to know what my legal rights are here? and whether this can be counted as an unreasonable request for him to make?
