  • New job - no contract, no confirmed rate of pay etc

I have been out of work for a while, and was pleased to be offered five weeks work (what I was told by my employer at the interview) up until Christmas.
That was back in October, and I started the job last week.
However, prior to starting the job, I found it difficult to contact the employer, and there were several questions from me which remained unanswered.
I queried the rota, where instead of five weeks work, I only have two days a week at the very busiest times, I have no contract, no confirmed rate of pay (I was told £12 PH at the interview), and each day I have been there (four days in total) the rostered hours have changed without warning.
I was asked to pay for a DBS check up front, and I have not received the certificate yet, and I have not been told when we are getting paid.
The supervisor seems to have taken an instant dislike to me - probably because I keep asking questions about the things which I have mentioned.
I got this job through a Jobcentre jobfair, and took it because I am fed up with being unemployed (I started work in 1975), and because the Jobcentre kept pressurising me to take anything.
I have signed off, and to be honest, I feel like I have jumped from the frying pan into the fire.
Can anyone please advise, because this is the first place in 40 years where I have not had a contract.

Can anyone please help on this matter, because my wife and I are both signed off and I don't know if I will get paid for the work which I have done.
    Thanks

Because just 5 weeks work is available the employer doesn't have to provide a contract.

The only thing I can suggest is to go back to the Jobcentre tosee if they can help.

Thanks, I have tried the Jokecentre but they are not interested.
I suppose that they have got us off their hands now, and I am yet another person who is lowering the unemployment statistics.

How many hours a week are you actually working?
I ask because it appears that if it's less than 16 hours you can still sign on.

It was 35 last week and is scheduled to be 22 this week, so unfortunately it is outside the limit. I was originally told it would be around 45 -50 hours a week which I was looking forward to. Tried to phone in today for more information but nobody could help me.
