    Hired to work in Manchester

    This thread is a bit different and - apologies - not necessarily relevant.

    Anyway, all things being equal, I will soon be starting a new job in Manchester.

    I'm desperately trying to work out where to live.

    I've been thinking about the City Centre, Didsbury, Wilmslow but now Macclesfield is my favourite.

    My salary will be around Ł25k plus benefits. Peanuts in London but appears to be very reasonable up north.

    Does anyone know what Macclesfield is like? Rents are low compared to London and even Central Manchester but I think commuting costs add up over Ł200 pcm.

    Somehow I don't fancy living right at the centre though that would mean no commuting. My work place could not be more central.

    Any advice, please?

    Move over to Northern Ireland where everything is cheap like i did

      Heaton Moor and Marple are meant to be nice places (Marple is only about 20mins commute from the city centre by train). Didsbury is OK but can be pricey
      Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

      It doesn't matter where your journey begins, so long as you begin it...

        Just looked at Glossop.

        It could now compete with Macclesfield. Looks like a nice little town in the Peak District and just a 35 minute train commute from Manchester Piccadilly.

        Yes, Didsbury seems to be a nice suburb but is - as Kati says - pricey (by northern standards). Rents seem cheap by London standards but salaries are lower too.

          Glossop, the little I have seen, is lovely. Don’t know Macclesfield but from what I hear there are good and bad areas –just like everywhere really. Most do agree it is a nightmare to get to (which to my mind is not necessarily a bad thing) Wilmslow is stunning but v v expensive. Whatever choice you make I do want to say congratulations:clap2: and the very best of good luck.
