  • Wage increase

    Hi there,

My boyfriend has recently just started a job in his choosen secyor after finishing university. He completed a bsc in business computing now working as a it helpdesk assistant ( he is wanting to be a web developer)

He started the end of november last year and had to complete his probationary period of 6 months where he was paid a standard wage. Upon completing your probabtion you recieve a standard wage of £14,500 which everyone recieves in the company. He was promised that the month after been paid this that he would recieve a pay rise of £16,000 as a trainee graduate. That month came and he was still paid £14,500 so he questioned as to why he didnt recieve the rise (his manager and even the person above his manager) they appologised for this and were annoyed too. My boyfriend isnt. The type of person to be ungrateful or expext things but he has worked real hard and done so mich over time since hes worked there and believes he deserves this. He is doing some training courses for things he hadnt completed at university and feels this may be affectig his rise but without them telling him he doesnt really know whch he is annoyed about. They have told him it will be on his next pay slip which will be the end of this month. He feels that the director is putting a stop to him getting this pay rise but nobody is saying so hes in the dark and i dont believe this is the correct way to be treated in a job.
They are also planning on bringing somebody elese in who is a little more experienced and wanting to pay him between 18-20k so doesnt seem like theres any budget:

Can anybody shed some light onto whether this is ok and what way he should be going wbout it?

Sory not sure if ive posted on correct forum

    Thanks

    Re: Wage increase

Was that stated in his job offer and/or contract of employment, that during the probationary period he'd be on £14,500 and once he passed his probation his salary would be £16,000? It's quite common to pay a little more after the probation period but if it was specified as part of his contract or the terms of his job offer, it wouldn't really be a pay rise as such, it would be a contractual term which the employer should honour regardless of who else they are hiring or how much they are being paid. Having said that, it looks like they are not saying they won't be honouring the term, they just haven't got around to updating their payroll. If the contract said he'd be paid £16,000 after the six month probation, he should make sure they backdate the increase back to June. :thumb:
