I am currently on a fixed term contract covering someones maternity leave, i have been offered a permanent contract by same company but with a drop in wages when my current contract finishes......Can the company legally drop my wage?

Yes, it is a different contract. Temps and fixed term contracts do sometimes get a premium to reflect the lack of security.
They have made an offer, it is up to you whether or not to accept it.
You could, if you want, try to negotiate with them.

If the duties/roles are the same, and if the drop in wages is significant i.e. between £0.50 -£1 an hour or more, then i would negotiate. If the drop in wages is less than a £0.50p then its likely the drop is merely a reflection of the premium (as steve mentioned above) you were being paid in addition to the standard rate of pay for the actual role you were covering, and its likely your wage will be the same wage as the person who's returning from maternity.
If its a different role thats been offered to you then you should just accept it as the new role may well be on a completely different pay grade to the role you were providing maternity cover for!Please note that this advice is given informally, without liability and without prejudice.
