Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

      Re: Trade unions

I will say that I am surprised and disappointed at the rabid anti union statements being demonstrated in this thread, which, as I keep saying, was only trying to be helpful and informative.

Anyone can join a trade union, and there is no doubt that they will help individuals with employment related concerns. There is also no doubt that workers in unionised employers get a better deal. There is lots of evidence of that.

Picking out a few union general secretaries, one of whom is dead anyway, and quoting the Daily Mail to indicate how much they are paid is hardly informative or helpful. Surely everyone knows that the Daily Mail hates trade unions?

But, even if it is true, it doesn't detract from the message that grass root trade unionism can help individuals with difficulties at work.

And to list everything that is wrong with this country and the economy and blame it on the trade unions is laughable.

if people don't want to join a trade union, then they don't have to join one. If, however, people want the insurance of knowing there will be someone there to advise them if they need help, or to provide expert legal advice when it is needed, then those people have the option to join a trade union.

Unfortunately, a lot of people these days have forgotten that unions do a brilliant job at advising and supporting individual members, because all the press ever talk about is nonsense about how much the union leaders are paid, or what they are doing politically. All this thread is supposed to be doing is reminding people that trade unions do still exist, and that they have a value to every worker in this country.

Briiliant! anti Union comments Many of the Union bosses are Anti Government and Anti Bosses and the members are paying them although many do not support the Political Party the Unions pay for.

Well in that case if member wants to they can opt out of paying political dues cf Chapter vi of Part 1 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (consolidation) Act 1992.

                      Re: Trade unions

                      With union...

I was in the printing industry back in the 90's. Was on a lower wage than everyone else that was doing the same job as me. I asked for a pay-rise and was refused. joined the union and with in six months the union spoke to the employer on my behalf and I got my pay-rise... and it was back dated.

Two years later the company was bought out by an american firm and they moved everyone to another local printers that they had also recently purchased. People from both locations were offered voluntary redundancy to manage the merger of the two firms. To cut a long story short, I took the offer and the union also paid me a weekly redundancy payment for 26 weeks or until I found employment again.

We would always be consulted about yearly pay rises.

                      Without union...

I now work for a retail company and was not in a union.

Sick pay has been changed. Still get sick pay but only after you have been off for the first three days.

Contract of employment is constantly being modified.

We no longer get a Christmas bonus.

We dont get consulted about yearly pay rises.

                      .................................................. .................................................. ....................

My opinion is that unions give you a voice at your place of work. If you're not in a union then you don't have a voice.

                        Re: Trade unions

This thread has turned into a row on both sides. The history of the trades union movement is one of the trying to protect themselves from those employers who would down pay and safety standards. We have good standards of these at present the real danger lies in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment #Partnership . This will allow overseas companies to sue in the Uk because UK legislation has restricted thier profit . We need to keep the genie in the bottle or we could take a giant step backwards in safety and workers rights . I am fully aware this is part of the the tory plns to sell off all the remaining national assets . We need to keep petitioning the government not to sign . I would warn people not to just look at the Daily Scaremonger for their news . It has a well known right wing almost Fascist bias. Read the Independant and the Guardian as well for the other side of the argument . Radio 4 is excellent or news despite the BBCs rather right wing bias.
