  • Gross misconduct - future references.

Hi - thanks in advance for any advice you are able to provide.

I was sacked over a year ago from the civil service for gross misconduct (alcohol related). Prior to this I had an unblemished record for over 10 years. Essentially I had a nervous breakdown and resorted to self medication through alcohol and turned up for work the a enibriated. I do not contest the dismissal.

During the past year I have sought medical help and I am now in a position in which to, hopefully move on in my life/career.

i would like like to know what kind of reference I could look to receive? Is it likely to be date only or would it include my dismissal. The reference itself will be produced by central HR and not my previous line manager and the department I worked for has a date only policy for generic references I believe I.e. They do not go into detail regarding the posts a person held etc.

    many thanks in advance

As a current CS, I would hazard a guess that the reference you get will merely state that you worked between between your start & finish dates and thats it.

It would state that you were dismissed at the end date, however, if you are upfront with that for your future employer then it is up to them if they decide to hire you. If you are upfront then you may want to state the help you have received and the support that you now have in place.

Just a suggestion on the last bit.
