Hi everyone,
I'm hoping that I may be able to get some advice and support regarding the nightmare I and my colleagues currently find ourselves in.
I am currently living in France working a seasonaires fixed term contract with an airport transfer company.
Sadly, the job has turned out to be appaling, the conditions are terrible and as a team we are being bullied and harassed into doing things by our incompetent line manager with little to no explaination. We are working a rota we do not understand, being told to work unsociable and long hours at incredibly short notice and spoken to like second class citizens when we dare question our orders.
We all want to leave, some of us already have put have paid heavily for it.
This is where things get difficult for the rest of us and in particular me. Before coming out here we were offered staff accomodation but in order to secure it we had to pay around 80% of the total rent due, pay for utilities and provide a large deposit. The rental agreement states that should we leave the company prior to the contract ending none of the monies paid will be refunded - as things stand the company will keep £1750 of my hard earned money (rent overpayment and deposits) - and to be honest it's the only money I have!
In addition the company had been known to make huge deductions from employees wages upon leaving - charges for re-recruitment, training of new staff and just about anything else they can put a name and a figure to which dramatically reduces the final wage of any outgoing employee.
Can anybody provide any advice on the legalities of the above, ultimately I am personally now trapped here as I do not have the means to leave the company and get myself home - ultimately I am being actively held here against my will having the loss of my money used as the threat. Additionally the staff accomodation has had no hot water for three weeks which is making life even more difficult. Are there any agencies I can contact for assistance in the matter?
Thanks.
