the relevant clause says: "The consultant will fully indemnify the company for any compensation paid to clients as a result of complaint about the advice given by the consultant. This clause shall be valid even after the termination of the employment with the company"

This is literally unlimited liability. It doesn't even require proof of negligence - just the fact of 'a complaint'.

I cannot see this standing.

As an update, my ex employer has now withdrawn the claim, presumably because the previous contract did not contain an indemnity clause - I reckon he's wasted over £10k pursuing this.
