That is my overwhelming gut feeling. Not getting paid until probably 1st September (last day of month falls on a weekend). As the boss sorts that payroll himself I am worried that he may mess me around with payment if I hand notice in before.

Get paid first, then hand your notice in............

Time is really of the essence to start new job. I need to say yes to that on Tuesday. It would leave me in a very awkward position should I not be able to start due to any funny business from the employer I'm leaving.

well just say yes!
you say pay day is 1st September hand in your 1week notice when pay is safely in the bank.
you don't have to work the notice just leave

Well I must say I'm very impressed with all the responses especially on a Sunday morning on a bank holiday weekend :-)

Definite food for thought and appreciate you all taking the time to post advice. Still quite undecided as to how to play it but this does seem to clarify things somewhat.

Get paid on 1st, make sure it's in the bank.
Hand your notice in on the 1st as well (if money is in bank)
Then throw in a sicky from 2nd
You would in effect be sick for just 4 days, as you leave on the Friday, so you don't even have to hand in a certificate.
