  • Employer trying to force more trades

    Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is legal or not so asking for your opinions here, so will thank you guys in advance for any and all replies, thankyou.

I've been in my job for 6+ years, and about 2+ years ago I got promoted.

My job after promotion is a field engineer for white goods (washing machines, cookers etc), and brown goods (tv's, dvd players etc).

Recently my work is trying for force more work onto me which I do not agree with, they now want me to, on top of the above, be a plumber, built in engineer, computer service engineer and others.

However, they are not willing to up my pay accordingly, i'm on less than £8/hour as it is.

Can they force this work onto me, I would be willing to do this extra work, however, I believe pay should be seriously negotiated.

    Many thanks for your responses.

Are you qualified to be a plumber? I doubt it!

Have you been trained to provide the service(s) they are asking of you. Note: its not illegal to do the plumbing - Unless your dealing with gas or electrics which by law must be done by certified professionals.

What does your contract state in regards to being required to carry out additional, comply with employers reasonable request?

Are they asking you to do these jobs all the time?

What is your current job description in your contract, in regards to duties your required to perform?

Once you have answered we can give you better advise.

Re: Employer trying to force more trades

I got called into the office this morning in regards to this and have asked for a copy of my contract, once I receive that, I will be able to answer your questions more accurately.

Their idea of plumbing training is, heres a piece of copper pipe, heres a washing machine tap, this is how you fit them together, now you have a go, good, well done, now your trained, sign here.

they would be expecting these duties to be part of our day to day activities as and when the calls come in accordingly.

Now this may seem like a weird question, but I feel I have to ask, if I went to work one day and they said 'today your a brick layer', in a nut shell would that mean I would have to do it?

I'm confused here as when I signed up to be a field engineer, I signed up to do the brown and white goods, I know there are staff on more money then myself who only deal in one side of those and no more.

Once I get my copy of the contract, I will fill you in more.

        Many thanks for your replies
