    Re: taxman

You don't mention whether or not your son's ex employer deducted tax and NI contributions before failing to pay HMRC.

You can get info about what to do from this link:

        Re: taxman

You say the employer used someone else's NI number? Did you mean to say they used the wrong tax code?

If they used the wrong tax code it depends on why as to the outcome.
        Here's HMRC link about it

If the employer has been deducting Tax & NI contributions, but using the wrong number, bring it to the employers attention and ask them to correct the error.
Then get confirmation in writing from the tax office that your records are upto date. If you don't, and the matter isn't corrected, the first you'll know about it is on claiming pension, and by then correcting it will be a nightmare!

            Re: taxman

As des8 points out, you need to be sure about this, lest he get an unpleasant surprise later. Verify what the employer says by requesting a Pension Forecast.

            See here: https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-statement

Everyone should request (and keep, forever), these on a regular basis. The system is in chaos, so regularly updated proof of contributions is a must.
