  • Complaint before i've even started my contract...

This is going to sound pathetic.. and it is. but i need to make sure im gonna be alright..

    Here goes,

I had this stupid argument on Facebook and some quite nasty things were said (should of bit my tongue)

I work for sky and this party has said they're gonna contact my employer about an argument i had on facebook with them... My contract of employment begins on 13/1/2014 yes that is in 2 days so not even started the job yet...

it had nothing to do with my work or anyone at work absolutely no connection between this argument or my job/employer...

is anything going to come of it or will it get opened, generic response sent and nothing said ever again because it's that pathetic...

If it was a personal argument that had nothing to do with Sky or the work you will be doing for them, then why should Sky (or any prospective employer) be interested? :noidea: Employers shouldn't be concerned with personal arguments. Sadly, there appears to be a growing tendency to take online disagreements to people's employers, this is something I'd never heard of till very recently, when there's been a few examples of people's employers being contacted after having disagreements on forums and/or by email.

There are circumstances where an employer may take action if they receive a report backed with evidence that shows you may be involved in things that could affect your employment -habitual use of illegal substances could be an example. In certain lines of work (highly unlikely with Sky), being in debt, having CCJs and even trading in shares could be an issue. Depending on the employer and the evidence presented, the report/claim may well be ignored/dismissed or investigated further if necessary. What they can't do is just take someone's word, how would they know that person is not just a total nutter with nothing better to do?

It's not possible to say anything further without knowing the details in this case, i.e. what sort of thing your new 'Facebook Foe' would have to say (did you just disagree with them or did you threaten to kill them and burn down their house?) We don't even know whether they will REALLY go as far as to contact your employers -most people wouldn't but I've known some who have done so- or whether that's just an idle threat (much more likely after a disagreement). :argue:

This is going to sound really bad and please don't anyone take offence to it.

Someone decided it be fun to take the micky out of my lad whos disabled and dying (harsh but it's the only way to describe his condition)

So i lost my head a bit and wished cancer upon this individual. I know it's absolutely diabolical and i feel sick to the bottom of my stomach for saying it...

I didn't think my employer would be bothered in the slightest nor can they take any action against me for something as small as this that has no relation to sky at all... The only way they found out my employer was through my 'About' Page i updated my employer to Sky.

Under the circumstances, it is understandable.

I wouldn't think so either, since it's not even a threat, just something uttered (typed?) on the spur of the moment, which is of no relevance to your employment whatsoever. :nono:

I'm going to take the liberty to give you a word of advice here: It's probably best not to have your employment details on FB, I certainly wouldn't, :nono: and there's a very good reason for that. If you want, you could describe yourself as a telecoms engineer, a customer service specialist or whatever it is you do for Sky, but it's best to leave out the actual name of your employer. I know a fairly recent case where someone's FB page pinpointing their place of employment was used as part of a package of evidence sent to someone's employers with the purpose of getting them sacked. :scared:

This is something that probably wouldn't occur to many people unless they've known about something like this happening before. If you run your own business, are self-employed, etc. then fine, otherwise just leave it out to be on the safe side. :thumb:

I cannot believe i said something as horrible as that i just snapped.

I imagine the email will be opened and deleted though as like FlamingParrot said it's not within their interest to deal with an argument on facebook that has nothing to do with them?

Thank you massively for the help and advice I was just concerned i was going to lose my job before i even get it... Or get there Monday morning and be infront of a panel being sacked for something (yes typed) in outrage at a comment received!

I can see why you snapped, we all do at times. The problem with the online world is that the typed word remains while the spoken word fades away. If you'd shouted those same words at someone during a verbal argument, there would be no way of re-quoting them, unless the other party had been recording the conversation -highly unlikely unless it was a phone conversation and the other party had a recording device active at the time. hone: When you type something, even if it gets deleted shortly afterwards, it can still be preserved as a screenshot, in print, etc. hoto:

No, it certainly wouldn't be of any interest to them, and the party in question may not even go as far as contacting them. Also Sky is a big company and you're not even an employee, not yet and from what you say, you'll be working as a contractor, so they may not even find you. WHO are they going to contact within Sky? Whoever receives the email is likely to dismiss it.

Your employers are not likely to take any notice of random complaints received from total strangers going on about things that are utterly irrelevant to them and your job.

With regards to those people who keep sending you messages, you should tell them they are guilty of harrassment which is a criminal offence and you are going to file a complaint with the police. :mod: If they are sending you messages via Facebook, you should report them to Facebook, who could suspend or even close their account if they are misusing it to issue threats.

I you make a complaint against them for harrassing you, that could work in your favour in the unlikely event that your employers should contact you and ask you about it.

I've made reports to Facebook is it worth getting police involved I don't want to make a fuss about it and it's highly unlikely sky (webhelp) will be interested as it's nothing to do with the company

For those giving advice perhaps a read of this as it involves threats via social media. My personal opinion on this is that Zaac, you need to seek police advice using 101 phone number as it is a non emergency basis merely to see whether there is any criminal offence.

Are they suggesting that they are going to get you the sack? I would block them on facebook and ensure that your facebook settings ONLY allow friends to see your posts.

                              I very much doubt it.
