  • I called an AMBULANCE

Ok, so I called an ambulance and now I have no work given tome.
I work on a bank contract for a private health screeningcompany. I have worked there for 14 months previously I was given full timework every week every month.
3 months ago I was performing a health screening for a customer.I was heart monitoring andfound thisperson was in an undiagnosed and potentially unstable condition. As an exambulance service employee. I made the judgement this elderly person neededimmediate attention. So I called an ambulanceso they could use more specialist monitoring. I agreed with the patient thatthis was the best course of action as I had a duty of care to them. I couldn’trisk this person walking home and collapsing. I wouldn’t sleep at night.
I called the Paramedics out who did a range of tests.Administered some drugs and decided she would need to go to hospital. He calledfor a backup ambulance to transport her to hospital and off she went.
I later got a call from our head office having a go at mefor calling an ambulance and I should first call the office to ask permissionto see if an ambulance is worth calling. I was told I didn’t know what I wasdoing and wasted the ambulance time etc, etc.
Since then I have not been given any work at all. I’ve not hadany form of discipline written notices etc. I emailed every week to ask why I wasn’t beengiven any work and was it because I called an ambulance out. Each time theysaid it was not because of that. It’s because there just is no work availableat the moment.
However my colleague who works on the same team as me withthe same bank contract has continually been given work each week for the last 3months. I’m a senior member of the team and my colleague had only started withthe company 6 months ago. Her work has picked up massively, however I’ve beengiven nothing.
Most of us on the team are pretty certain it is to do withme calling an ambulance out. I feel I have been treated unfairly and continue todo so. So now I’m 3 months without a wage. I carn’t keep hanging on for work tobecome available. It is available but it’snot been given to me.
Please anyone, where do I stand? I know I do not have manyoptions as a bank worker.

Are you contracted directly with them?
Exactly what does the contract say with regard to hours, availability, and so on?

Do you have paperwork to prove this?

Your actions were entirely appropriate. The paramedic evidently thought so too.

Trick them into putting the above comments in writing.

These people will lie without hesitation. Do not deal with them by email. Avoid dealing with them over the telephone unless you are prepared to record the conversation. Conduct all correspondence in writing.

This is malice, there can be little doubt of that. However, proving it will be almost impossible.

I know I do not have many options as a bank worker.

If you challenge them - and right would certainly be on your side - they will seek revenge. Frankly, I would leave as quickly as possible - before they fabricate some allegation against you. I am also ex-ambulance service, and know only too well how corrupt and vicious Health Care sector managers are.
