  • in cab cameras

hi all, I was wondering if anyone knows it there is any law regarding cameras in lorrys. my partner works as a driver and the firm he works for has just had front viewing cameras put in all the wagons. I think its to do with insurance ect so any bad driving or accidents are all recorded. he did a bit of research on them and discovered they have voice recorders built in so basically everything that is said in the cab, is recorded. the boss can take out the sd card to download the information and one of the other drivers said he peeped at the boss in his office watching the footage, and that the drivers conversation in his cab was crystal clear. is this legal??? obviously the camera is, but an in cab voice recorder??? thank you all xx

    Re: in cab cameras

These in-cab cameras are designed, specifically, to provide evidence in cases of staged accidents, otherwise known as Crash for Cash, which heavy goods drivers tend to be victims of choice for the fraudsters.

The Information Commissioner's Office publishes a guide for employers as to the use of video monitoring. You can download it at www.ico.gov.uk.

If the employer has told the workforce the cameras are being used for a particular purpose, e.g. fraud prevention, when, in fact, they are being used for a completely different purpose, e.g. monitoring of employees, that may amount to a breach of trust and confidence on the part of the employer.

Download the guide from the ICO's website and see what it says about what your partner has witnessed.
Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.
