I've come across supervisors and managers like the one in your case before and, to be honest, employers would do themselves and their employees a big favour by getting rid of such idiots. If employers were to do this instead of burying their heads in the sand and letting the matter get to the stage where it becomes a problem - and a potentially expensive problem - I would not be surprised if it lead to a drop in the number of days lost through sickness due to the actions of these prats, a reduction in industrial relations problems and, consequentially, industrial tribunals. Employers need to wake up to the damage supervisors and managers of the type highlighted in your case can do to a business.
