  • Law regarding giving work telephone number

Hi, work recently had an alarm fitted and now they expect us to be on call to go in and turn it off at anytime without consulting us first.
They are also now asking for my personal mobile number so they can contact me if the alarm does go off. Do I have to give them my number?
As its my own phone I don't want them having my number, i refused to give it to him several weeks ago and he said he would deal with it at a later date, I'm wondering if he is using the alarms as an excuse to get my number.
    Thanks

Why - do you think he actually wants a date?

Is it your job to be on call if there is a problem at work?

Remember the days I was on call 24 hours a day all year round (unless on official holiday), only home phone those days, but the Police etc needed number, they also were given a social club number where I might be, and came in useful as call outs happened quite often>

Why not ask him to give you a Pay & Go phone so you won't have to reveal your private number. You don't pay for incoming calls on Pay & Go and you can get ugly handsets for as little as £20

I actually agree with Plan B , if your work wants you to be on call they should pay for a mobile and a proportion of your landline rental. However what is in your contract

                Thanks for the replies

1, He doesn't want my number for a date. We don't get on to well and when he had my number previously when he was in the camera room he would phone me on my mobile - saying what I was doing etc..

                2. It's not in my contract to be on call, I've worked there for 13 years, two years ago they moved to a premises where they installed an alarm and because I'm the manager he said its my responsibility to come out if the alarm goes off, no petrol or call out fee given

                3. I don't have a problem with being given a "works phone" for them to contact me on that, funnily enough everyone else in a managers position has one... I just don't want him having my own mobile number but how do I explain this without coming across as being in polite words a bitch

                Thanks

Re: Law regarding giving work telephone number

I sense you're more angry at being placed 'on call' than anything else. You've been there for 13 years and job responsibilities can evolve with time and new technology. I know nothing about employment contracts but the vague title 'Manager' may/may not cover what you're being asked to do. If your contract is specific on hours worked then you need to see whether you could refuse to work outside these hours to do things such as crawl out of bed in the middle of the night to attend to a false alarm miles away.

You won't look like a bitch for not giving him your personal mobile number. Is there a particular reason why you don't want him to have it? You can always not answer if you see it's him or the alarm company ringing on caller display. If he questions this lack of contact just say you have a poor mobile signal where you live

Re: Law regarding giving work telephone number

To be honest being on call doesn't bother me, if I'm asleep my phone won't wake me anyway.. As I'm a deep sleeper

I have had a lot of problems with him in the past, I manage a shop within a company single handily which involves, ordering, invoicing, stocktaking, serving, web shop etc all by myself. I've had several meetings with him, explaining I'm too busy to even take a lunch break etc but his attitude was that's your fault not mine but when I tried to explain what I do on a day to basis, he didnt want to know.. So I've cut back on working over for free, started taking lunch breaks etc which hasn't gone down well

so with all the problems I have with him I dont wont work infringing into my personal life, hence why I changed my number In the first place so he no longer had it...

Don't get me wrong I love my job, i don't want to leave. Just need a solution to the current sisituation thanks

I'm afraid that I am therefore not seeing a solution here. You are on call, and you manage the shop - having contact details for you therefore does not seem unreasonable as a request. What may be of more concern is that if you are called out and you fail to turn out.... that could very easily be a serious disciplinary offence. At this point my only suggestion is to say that you have just lost your mobile phone, and haven't replaced it, but you will be happy for the employer to provide a phone for work purposes. But I am afraid that whilst he cannot force you to hand over your own personal phone number, contacting you out of hours for emergencies is clearly, from what you say, a part of the job you have accepted, and if you refuse, that could get you into trouble.

                        Good idea.

If they start huffing and puffing, it could be pointed out that such expenditure will be tax deductible.

Nonsense - one may buy quite good (but basic) handsets for that much!

Where, as nobody else was looking, he had opened his trouser flies...

And what knickers you were wearing? :rolleyes2:

The solution is really very simple:
                            1. Go on eBay and buy a cheap, unlocked handset. I would recommend a Motarola RAZR series clamshell 'phone.
                            2. Get a PAYG SIM card of the network of your choice.
                            3. Activate the SIM card.
                            4. Give him the new 'phone number

That certainly is the case where I live!
