  • Change of shift starting time without notice

My son works in a care home where he receives at best the minimum wage. There is no shift pattern with a manager advising of shifts over the next week or so by posting a duty roster. On three occasions recently he has finished work one day and gone home. On returning on an early turn the next day he has found that his shift has been changed since leaving work the day before to a late turn. No notification by phone or text or email has been given he has turned up for work and had to go home and return later.

    Is this practice illegal?

      1) No - I believe it is a 30 hr week
      2) Yes - 12 hours between shifts
      3) The shifts are erratic but I believe that he gets a 24 hour break once a week
      4) Yes - he is 22
