  • Company Mobile Phones

Hello All, I wondered if some one could help with a discussion we have been having in our office. I have worked for the same company for the last 16 years and as part of our employment contract we are issued with a company mobile phone. Our contract states that we are allowed to use the mobile phone for personal use and as a result all of my personal apps, accounts etc have been signed up to using my company mobile number for verification purposes. The phone bill is paid for by the company. If, for whatever reason, I was to leave the company, am I entitled to take to mobile number with me for use with a personal mobile contract.

You need to have that conversation with your employer.

"entitled", as in have a legal right to take the number with you? I doubt it unless it says so somewhere in your employment contract or other documents issued to staff. Whether they would allow it in practice you'd only find out by asking them.

As a matter of interest if the company pays the cost of all your personal phone calls do they declare this to HMRC so that you get taxed on it as a benefit in kind?
All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

Thanks for coming back to me. I didn’t think I would be entitled, but some of my work colleagues said I would. You have settled the argument.
