  • Demotion

I work for a large organisation in the UK tourist industry.
In our department 9 of the staff myself included were told on 20/3 that there was a proposal to demote us, freeze our pay until the staff at the lower grade had reached our pay level. We received letters on 23/3 inviting us to individual meetings to discuss the proposal on 27/3. No other information has been given to us. The date the new proposed positions is due to start will be approx 10/4. What can we expect from this initial meeting and what relevant questions can we ask? Do we need to agree to anything at this initial meeting?

Sorry this is just a quick response but just wanted to say you do not need to agree anything at the meeting.

You should ask though that any new proposal is provided to you in writing and that you should be given a reasonable time to consider and taken advice on what is being proposed.

What is the basis/rationale for this proposal to demote a department of 9?

Ask why you are only being given two weeks for the new proposals to come into force which view is not reasonable notice of such a change?

Another suggestion would be to look at your contract of employment to see of anything is mentioned in respect of demotion / freezing salary / changes to terms.

Once you have more information from the meeting and you have any questions just come back to this thread.

I do not provide advice by PM although I may on occasion ask you to send me documents this way but any related advice will be provided back on your thread.

I do my best to provide good practical advice, however I do so without liability.
