  • Lease car

Hi. I work for a public sector orgnaisation and recently took a promotion, it was a role I wanted and it also included the option of an amount of money towards a lease car which could be use to respond to emergency calls (has covert blue lights etc), the car can also be used for perosnal use.

The amount of money offered towards a car was not just for responders ie yes or no but increased dependent upon your seniority within the organisation. This is within the organisations lease car policcy as oppposed to written in to contract. So, I regarded it as part of my renumeration as it "came with the job" even though there was no option to have the money equivalent instead.

Recently, a decsion has been made to look at rescinding cars and providing pool cars instead and retracting the amount available to me to put towards a lease car each year and use for personal use. I sold my own car and now pay an amount and have the lease take care of tax, MoT, insurance repairs etc. But will have to re look again at funding that now that the car allowance has been rescinded.

Even though the amount was not built in to contract, I felt it was an implied part of my renumeration package and as such, took the job knowing that the extra costs of travel required to fulfil the role would be offset by the provision of a car.

Would it be seen as part of my renumeration as I will be financally worse off with what has happened?

    Thank you,

If you took the job knowing that the organisation was providing you with the opportunity to have personal use of a lease car at no or little cost to you, the employer should compensate you if they decide to remove this benefit
Are other staff affected? Do you belong to a union that could help you?

I have to pay something towards it but the firm pays a reasonable sum each year. Yes there will be a number of staff affected for sure,

Can affected staff get together to draft and sign a letter to management about their concerns regarding the possible removal of the benefit?
