  • Additional Role Dilemma

For the past 18 months, I have taken on a representative role within my company, which involves a paid commitment of 8 hours per month. After a particularly challenging group meeting on Monday with our leadership and wider team, the managing director suggested that I resign. He felt that the meeting resembled an ambush and that he was under significant pressure to address difficult questions.

I now find myself in a dilemma: should I heed his suggestion and resign to maintain harmony, or should I seek further clarification, possibly from HR, before making a decision? Additionally, I feel considerable pressure to step down from this role to avoid causing further disruption. Having been with the company for two years, I want to ensure that I make the right choice.

Is it just the additional role that you are being asked to reason?

If so, isn't that a matter for you to decide? Or is there a legal point you would like to discuss?

Thanks Atticus, I have enjoyed the additional role and the extra money for the past 18months but have a concern that if I don’t resign then the MD will make my day job increasingly difficult and then result in me moving on. My question is can the MD request I resign my additional role for something quite insignificant?

How were you appointed as a representative presumably on behalf of staff in the company?

Hi ULA, I put myself forward for the extra position and was selected alongside one other who is also under a huge amount of pressure to resign.

It does not sound like you were appointed by a voting process of your fellow staff to the position of representing them.

If you have given the MD a "hard time" in a meeting where you were performing your role as staff representative, then that may be why you have received the suggestion to step down, however that does not mean to say that you have to. It may also have been a reaction by the MD at that moment in time related to the circumstances.
