  • Contact amendment

I’ve been working for the same employer for some time now. The business has recently been sold & is going downhill. Before I was told about the sale, I was asked to sign a hand written amendment to my contract stating I will remain at this company for X amount of time. I am really looking to leave now and have been offered something better elsewhere. ACAS questioned whether that’s even a legal addition to the contract but without looking at it, they couldn’t advise fully, other than to work my notice period. Has anyone else been in this position? I guess I just don’t want to get slammed with a court case for profit losses or whatever it is people can come up with. Please help

Can you just provide more detail about how this hand written amendment was made? Was this on your original contract of just a one sheet of paper? Was it signed by a manager/HR and yourself?

How much time do you have remaining?

I have seen such things but with a promise of a bonus payment if the employee stays to the end of the period. These have been situations where a company or a branch has been engaged in an orderly closing down.
