  • Contract confusion

    Hello.

I have a question about my employment contracts at work, the story is this:

I have worked part-time for a retail business since January 2020 under a permanent contract of 8 hours per week. As I have previously seeked to move up to a supervisor position but none have been available in my brand of the company. I have recently however been offered a role as supervisor in another brand of the company of 16 hours per week at a higher rate of pay. This role however is temporary as the store I will move too will be closing down at the end of March and their lack of current staff and my wish for more experience are of mutual benefit.

As my role will be a new position HR have sent me a new temporary contract with my new role and pay. This contract states that the employment will be temporary and will terminate on 31st March. I have had a verbal agreement with my current manager (who is actually managing both my current store and my new store) that come April I will move back to my previous role and pay.

I am worried that once April comes around I will find myself without either job because this new temporary contract will supercede my previously one as it does not state that I will move back to my previous role. As my current role is 8 hours per week and presumably they will not be paying me whilst working in another store then it is my feeling that that contract will automatically finish but I am unsure.

    Help would be appreciated.

The best help I can give is to say that you should go back to HR, explain your concerns, and ask what they are able to do to resolve them.

I agree with atticus as my concern for you is they are offering you a temporary contract with a fixed end/termination date and no mention of a return to your current role.

What you need to have in that contract is that you have a temporary reassignment to abc store on 16 hours per week at £xxx salary. When the store closes on 31 March you will revert back to your current position at xyz store on 8 hours per week at £xxx salary.
