Hi, I work for a large company but within a small specialised team. There are currently 9 of us, all trained to the same level, working within my department providing training on a certain piece of equipment, that equipment will shortly be going out of service but it will be replaced by a new system. The training requirements on the new equipment will be reducing from 9 to 7 with training being given to the 7 people going forward. Our managers seem to be using this as a redundancy vehicle, selecting their friends for training and disregarding others, no interview or consultation process is in place. We have basically been told the 2 that do not receive the training will be made redundant, is this legal?

Given the facts you have provided then yes, potentially this could be a redundancy siutation. If going forward there is a reduced requirement for the number of jobs needed to provide training on the new equipment then this could be considered a redundancy situation and a consulation process should be commenced with everyone in the team. Everyone in the team should be put in the "at risk" pool and a selection criteria matrix should be used to determine the two people who are made redundant. If you would like a one-to-one expert consultation with me on your employment issue than I can be contacted by emailing admin@legalbeaglesgroup.com
