    For those of us providing the advice it is useful to know that this is not the first issue you have had and helps us understand the dynamics of the environment you are working in, which in turn helps us in providing your with support.

    What I would suggest, if you do not want to agree to the prosposal, is that you set out in an email that you took the job on the basis of regular hours 5 days a week 9-2pm as set out in your contract. You have been more than willing to work extra when needed and this would not change, however given that they are in the process of recruiting, you would like them to take into consideration that you would like to revert back to your agreed contractual hours.

    That said, an employer can try to vary an employee's terms and conditions, hours of work being one of them, however they need to do this in consultation in the first instance. They need to take on-board the viewpoint of the employee if they are not willing to do agree to the new arrangement or if suggest an alternative arrangement for the employer to consider.

      Hi, I'm expecting an official job offer by the end of the week and I'll have to write a resignation letter from current job. It is a four week notice but I have some annual leave to use up, which I'd like to use to leave sooner. What would be the best way to phrase such a letter?

        If you have leave that you have acrrued and want to use during your notice period when you write your letter then all you need to say to cover this part is:

        " My contractual notice period is four weeks, however I would like to take the xxx days of holiday that I am entitled to during my notice. This therefore means that, although my notice period officially ends on xxxxx, (date 4 weeks time) by last working day will be xxxxxx (date 4 weeks time less the number of days holiday you are taking). Please acknowledge receipt of my resignation and confirn the arrangements for me to take my outstanding holiday entitlement.

          This afternoon I receved a letter confirming the verbal offer of the new job, subject to the receipt of satisfactory references. I thought they must've done that already before offering the job. Should I wait now before handing in my resignation?

            Do you have any reason to suspect you will not get satisfactory references? Have you given your new employer an indication of when you will be able to start?

            It is more than likely that they will approach your current employer for a reference so you will need to let them know anyway.

              There has been friction, as you can imagine, so I don't know. As far as I'm aware, a bad reference can't be given, but a certain-minded type could manage a way, although I don't really think it will happen, but bearing in mind the situation that was the final straw, it's hard to tell. I think I'll do it. Fingers crossed. The start date for the new job is 1st March. I'm going to email resignation this afternoon and ask for remaining leave to be taken into account.
